Melody Gowns Ltd has along and proud history,  founded on humble beginnings, in North Shields (Tyne and Wear) in 1973, originally working within another business called Hammonds a well known and long established tailors shop.

It was started by Geff Walker – a wet products salesman selling into hairdressing salons around the country who spotted a gap in the market for good well-made hairdressing gowns.

They began by supplying Gowns to small local salons, which was met with a positive response. The business quickly grew and in addition to supplying “off the peg” Gowns, the company started to manufacture bespoke Gowns supplying to luxury salons across the UK.

From their successful entry into the Hairdressing Gown market, Melody Gowns continued to grow, and were now beginning to supply wholesalers as well as their continually expanding customer base of independent salons across the country.

During 1978, the company’s order book was healthy with expansion into larger premises becoming inevitable.  Melody Gowns moved to their first dedicated premises later the same year, located in the west end of North Shields.

In the early 1980’s a new partner George Kenneth entered the business, to assist in dealing with the additional workload and more importantly to develop the business further.

He was also a salesman for a hairdressing products manufacturer, and spent his time as a commercial traveller covering the UK and had contacts in salons, distributors and wholesalers to the industry.

With this wealth of knowledge it was not long before the business began to expand again and the company starting supplying beauty uniform to salons, luxury spas & colleges, this side of the business grew almost overnight and in 1984 the company won a lucrative contract supplying uniform to Steiner Cruise Liners.

With production overflowing the company moved to a purpose built manufacturing facility on a new trading estate in North Shields, where the business still operates from.

By now Melody Gowns had become a firm favourite in the Hairdressing industry, due to their unique service and high quality products – a reputation that exists to this day.

They were now supplying to the biggest names in the industry including;

  • Wella
  • Saks Salons
  • Regis
  • Trevor Sorbet

With almost 40 years experience, Melody Gowns are still fully manufacturing in their UK plant, supplying the highest quality products to the industry.
